Director of Communications

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, a grades 6-12 day and boarding school of 705 students, is seeking a full-time Director of Communications.

The Director of Communications oversees external and internal communications with the school’s diverse constituents through publications, social media, the website and public/media relations. This position is responsible for implementing strategies and tactics that foster and support effective communication practices in alignment with St. Stephen's mission and values. Communication activities are designed to connect the St. Stephen's community of trustees, parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends; raise public awareness about the school and its mission; and support admission, advancement, marketing, and alumni relations efforts. 

Responsibilities:

School Identity and Brand Management

  • Collaborate with the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) and the Marketing and Communications (Marcom) Team to deliver high-quality content that not only reinforces the St. Stephen’s mission but also tells the story in thoughtful, immersive and meaningful ways.
  • Uphold the comprehensive editorial and graphic standards for the school’s print and digital communications.
  • Communicate and collaborate weekly with internal audiences to create stories for internal and external communication efforts on various platforms.
  • Serve as school-wide editorial manager for publications, correspondence, digital presence, and other school communications.
  • Guide external and internal personnel with production of print materials, merchandise, and apparel to ensure accurate and authentic representation of St. Stephen’s brand, identity, and graphic standards; approve all materials prior to production.
  • Maintain a comprehensive publication schedule and ensure all deadlines contained therein are met.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships to effectively head St. Stephen’s Communications Committee to include planning regular meetings, gathering information from in-house clients, and creating internal buy-in and consensus for collaborative communication and marketing work; serve as the communications resource and liaison for other select campus committees as assigned.
  • Maintain consistent messaging and visual identity throughout all school communication materials.
  • Collaborate with the Marcom Team to create, design, and implement strategic, engaging, and relevant marketing and communications campaigns that support Admissions’ recruitment calendar and Advancement’s campaign initiatives.
  • Ensure all internal and external communications and campaigns are accurate, fact-checked, cohesive, consistent, and compliments one another in sharing the same messaging, voice, visual imagery, and distribution schedules.

Writing and Publications

  • Assist with planning, writing, editing and producing all Admissions and Advancement publications.
  • Manage the production and print schedules of all Admissions and Advancement publications, maintaining close working relationships with graphic design, print and distribution partners to ensure timely and accurate mailings.
  • Plan, write and produce the bi-annual Spartan magazine, published in the Winter and Summer.
  • Manage the print publication of the school’s annual Student, Faculty and Staff Directory.
  • Collaborate with the CMCO to write and edit pieces for the Head of School and other internal constituents.

Online and Electronic Communication

  • Collaborate regularly with the Web Content Manager to maintain compelling, up-to-date and accurate website content.
  • Assist the Web Content Manager with writing and editing content for the St. Stephen's website, including news and events items and special event announcements.
  • Edit and produce the bi-weekly News and Notes from The Hill digital newsletter, for current parents, faculty and staff.

Media and Public Relations

  • Coordinate with the CMCO to serve as the school liaison with the news media.
  • Write and/or edit and coordinate regular news releases and distribute with compelling images to local media.
  • Understand relevant news angles within the St. Stephen’s community to craft substantive media pitches yielding increased earned media and placements.
  • Monitor trending news topics – seeking opportunities to join the conversation or elevate school community experts in the media.
  • Maintain updated media lists for local, regional and national news outlets.
  • Build collaborative relationships with writers and reporters relevant to the St. Stephen’s mission and brand.
  • Collect and archive news clippings through Google Alerts, designated media tracking software, and subscriptions to relevant publications and outlets, whether broadcast, digital or print.
  • Oversee and manage all ad buys in relevant media outlets.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or a related field.
  • Minimum of (6) years of marketing and communications experience preferably in the field of education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to craft a compelling story that is engaging, builds community, and is representative of the school's mission and values.
  • Willingness and ability to provide both thought leadership and insights in support of the school's strategic objectives.
  • Ability to own and drive project schedules from start-to-finish while effectively collaborating with colleagues to complete the work.
  • Team player and independent performer with the ability to work collaboratively and autonomously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management, job prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant marketing tools and platforms.
